How You Can Deal With Debt

Take Charge of Debt

An old proverb goes: The borrower becomes servant to the lender. The lender didn't get us in debt, we did. The lender won't get us out of debt, only we can. The buck literally stops here. You can become a victim of your own debt or you can put yourself in charge of your debt. Financial institutions, debt collectors and businesses will recognize, if you are going down or taking charge and treat you accordingly.

If you are going to defeat debt, you are going to have to be the Commander of your debt. To be in command you will need to be competent to command. This will mean you will have to educate yourself on debt and finances in general. You will need to evaluate your own past actions regarding your debt and financial practices. You will have to make tough choices and make them strategically and knowledgeably.

As commander of your debt you possibly will be negotiating with creditors or financial institutions. Deal with them professionally and honestly. Let them know your situation and be honest and decent with them. Win them over to your situation and ask them for a solution that works for both of you, instead of making them an enemy. People tend to love being asked for their advice, but no one likes being yelled at, especially if you owe them money.

If some creditor won't cooperate or is abusive, take charge and let them know that it's not a solution or acceptable. Let them know that an aggressive tactic is going to wind up costing both of you in the long run, if it can't be settled some way. Make them understand that it's in their best interest to "make a deal" and make it professionally.

If you don't take command of your debt situation, someone will take charge of it for you. Not only will you lose financially, but you will lose your good name. Take command, and you could save everything, but at the very least your reputation.
